While it’s true that most of the TRAP laws are bogus… it’s actually reasonable to insist that the physician performing surgical abortions be a board-certified OB-Gyn. Early-term medication abortions I suppose could be overseen by an internist or GP, but anybody putting sharp things up my yoohoo better be an expert.

That’s why all OB-gyns are board certified, right?

If they are considered licensed to practice medicine otherwise in their specialty, placing additional qualifications on this type of procedure only is bullshit. You may choose to go to a board-certified physician, but that should not be used as a way to restrict access. Period.

The Role of Midlevel Professionals

As far back as 2003, after a review of the scientific literature and consultation with experts, the WHO began recommending that midlevel providers be trained to administer medication abortion.12 Since then, a number of professional organizations in the United States have adopted policies supporting an increased role of nurse-midwives, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in abortion care.13 The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Public Health Association and American Medical Women’s Association, for example, support increased training for nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants to provide medication abortion services.
